Has-Lo
A hundred years into the future, a young teen turns on his latest media listening device. As he searches through his MP9’s, he runs across a name…that name is Has-Lo. One of the greatest MC’s to ever grace the mic. A master wordsmith and an incredible producer, the youngster was well educated in the lore of the Has’ career. As he jumped on the moving sidewalk, he placed his musical glasses on his face and listened to the dusted out music of Has, he reminisced about the greatness of Has-Lo.
Hailing straight from the ill streets of Philadelphia, the home of legends, Lo was a part of the city’s greatness. From early on, Has knew he wanted to be a musician and in short time he was freestyling about objects in the room and banging beats out on tables while dreams of being well respected MC flew around in his head. His early journey was a “slow burn” in his own words. The first big break for Has was entering the 2007 MTVU Best Music on Campus contest. Full of talented artists, Has’ was a finalist for the grand prize and finished in the top 5. Riding that momentum, he released his first solo project, the criminally slept on (at it’s time) F*ck Has Day. It was here that Has’ showcased his rhyming and production skills with soon to be classic tracks such as “The Usual Way,” Unsigned Emcees,” and the humorous title track. It was truly an early indicator of how his career would go. Has could do the dark RZA influenced beats, dropping tales of loss and despair. Then he could turn around with his acute humor and deliver funny lines over bouncy, happy feeling tracks. It was this versatility that endured him to his legions of fans around the world due to his presence on the internet.
His hustle continued and soon he would drop another EP titled Small Metal Objects, which despite being made during a quick trip up north (upstate New York to visit friends, fools) showcased some of his deepest and nastiest production. The deep rumbling bass found on “Ain’t Got It In Ya” was enough to be heard beating in a car from a mile away. The EP also included one of the greatest tracks of young Has’ career in “The Quiet Things,” which was an ode to the broken hearted. It was also this song that produced Has’ first video, a “do-it-yourself” production shot with his cell phone camera. From there Has-Lo took a turn flexing his production muscles and dropped You Can Live Thru Anything if Magic Made It where he took a stab at remixing classic tracks from some of his favorite artists such as Ghostface, O.C. and others. In 2009, Has-Lo had a lot on his plate, a project on Kevin Nottingham’s HiPNOTT label, songs with Icon The Mic King and Paten Locke on deck and many other numerous things. For Has’, it seemed the future was all his for the taking…
As the kid arrived at his destination, he continued to be lost in a world of yesterday while nodding his head to the music and words of Has-Lo, one of the best to ever do it.
